The New Prek Toal Headquarters Sarus Cranes: Ang Trapang Thmor Spot Billed Pelicans: Prek Toal Cormorant and Great Egret Stork in Flight With its tropical climate and unique ecology, Cambodia is a spectacular place for the bird watcher and nature lover. The main focus is on Prek Toal on the Tonle Sap Lake. It the biggest bird reserve in SE Asia. Prek Toal is home to thousands of migrant birds including Whiskered Terns, Darters, Cormorants and Spot Billed Pelicans. Of great interest are the rare Adjutant and Painted Storks. In addition Cambodia has one of only 2 nesting sites for the beautiful and extremely rare Sarus Crane. Ang Trapang Thmor is a reservoir to the North. Both these places can be visited in day or overnight trips from Siem Reap. Early in the Bird Watching Season we can take a boat out into the mangroves. We get a splendid view of the nesting storks and pelicans from the top of a tree hide Here are some images taken on recent trips to Prek Toal and The Ang Trapang Thmor Bird Sanctuary, except*
More than a Bird Sanctuary; the village of Prek Toal is an interesting place to visit in its own right. Situated on the Sangkar River on the Opposite banks of the Tonle Sap From Siem Reap; this is a relatively prosperous fishing community with over a thousand house boats and land houses . It takes one and a half hours by boat. Prek Toal has few tourists as most come on day trips to the Bird Sanctuary. Apart from the Prek Toal HQ, where a few people stay overnight to watch the birds; there are few tourist facilities. This means the visitor can see a traditional Fishing village without the crowds!
